Colleen McLaughlin (Late)

Colleen was an absolute stalwart member of the Springsure Show; when the show resumed in 1955 (from its recess from 1930-1954) Colleen remarked: “Her excitement grew as she plunged into preparations for her very first show in her own town. Our best-looking stock horses were subjected to the indignity of a mouthful of curb bits, the use of which neither we nor they understood. To us what was important was that we were there – Riding in the Show, we were having a wonderful time, that is all that mattered.”
  • Colleen was a life member of the Springsure Pastoral & Agricultural (show) Society.
  • 1958 Miss C.I. McLaughlin was judged the best Lady Rider of the Show
  • 1959 Miss C.I. McLaughlin received the Champion awards for Best Ewe and Fleece.
  • 1961 There was an impressive display of drill by Pony Club members trained by Miss C.I. McLaughlin
  • 1972 Miss C.I. McLaughlin’s “Blue Moon” entry was judged champion exhibit of the Floral Art Section
  • She showed stud cattle, travelling to all major shows in Australia. To her honour she was the first woman to win the Junior Judges competition in Qld in 1947 and in 1951 was the first woman to win the Paraders competition at the royal National Show in Sydney
  • Colleen was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the 1984 Queen’s New Year Honours list for her service to pony clubs and shows.
In more recent years Colleen won prizes in the Pavilion for her jams and chutneys.
She has also served on the show committee. We wish to thank and remember Colleen during this time for all that she did for the Springsure Show Society and other clubs in town and beyond. She was truly one of a kind who will be deeply missed by the whole community.
Rest in Peace Aunty Col
Fred Wheeler (Late)

Fred Wheeler was a stalwart of the Springsure Pastoral and Agricultural Society for many years. He held the role of Vice President for a short term, but he was principally the Steward of the Agricultural Section for over 60 years and we greatly appreciated his support, knowledge of the Show Society and his willingness to undertake those stewardship responsibilities for so many years. Thank you for your dedication and commitment, Fred.

Rest in peace.
